Most winter deck damage is not done by the weather directly. It is done by the things owners fit to protect the boat from the weather: a cover that chafes, a line that saws, a batten that holds water, a tarpaulin that pools and then tears. A deck comes through the winter well when everything removable has been taken off, everything remaining has been rinsed and dried, water can run off rather than sit, and every point where a cover or a line touches the boat has been deliberately padded.

The principle to hold on to is that five months of gentle rubbing does more harm than one gale. Anything that can move against the deck will move, thousands of times, and gelcoat and anodising lose that argument. What follows works through stripping the deck, dealing with water, covering the boat properly, and protecting the specific points that get damaged.

Strip the deck first

Everything that can come off should come off, both because it survives better indoors and because a bare deck is far easier to cover cleanly. Sails, running rigging, canvas, cushions, the outboard, the liferaft, the horseshoe and danbuoy, the boathook, fenders not being used, jerry cans, and the contents of the cockpit lockers all belong ashore. Anything left lashed on deck is a chafe point, a water trap and a windage problem for the whole winter.

Take the opportunity to lift and check what does not normally come up. Deck plates, locker lids, the anchor and its rode, and the contents of the chain locker all benefit from being emptied, rinsed and dried, and the chain locker in particular is a reliable source of winter damp inside the hull if it is left full of wet chain and mud.

Once the deck is bare, rinse everything thoroughly with fresh water and let it dry properly before anything gets covered. Salt left on hardware under a cover spends the winter drawing moisture out of the air and holding it against the metal, which is the mechanism behind most of the corrosion owners find in spring.

Make the water go somewhere

Water that runs off does no harm. Water that sits does a great deal, and freezing water does more, so the single most valuable structural thing you can arrange is that no part of the deck or the cover holds a puddle.

Drains and scuppers

Clear the cockpit drains and the side deck scuppers, and check them by actually pouring water in rather than by looking. Leaves and pine needles accumulate for months and a blocked cockpit drain on a boat ashore turns the cockpit into a pond, which then freezes. Anchor lockers and gas lockers have drains that block just as readily and are checked far less often.

Cover geometry

Whatever cover you use has to shed water outward and downward at every point. That means a ridge along the centreline, enough slope, and no flat sections between supports. A tarpaulin that sags between two battens will collect a hundred litres in a wet fortnight, and the weight will either tear the cover, collapse the frame, or both. Check the shape after the first heavy rain rather than assuming it works.

Fittings that trap water

Winches, the mast step, sail track ends, jammers and any recessed fitting can all hold small amounts of water that freeze and expand. Cover the winches after rinsing and drying, and lift anything that is simply sitting in a puddle. A short length of packing under a fitting to break the water's surface tension is sometimes all it takes.

Covers and frames

Choosing the cover

The trade-off is the same one that applies below deck: a fully waterproof, non-breathable cover keeps rain out and condensation in. Over a winter, a sealed plastic tarpaulin down to the waterline creates a humid tent around the boat, and the deck underneath stays permanently damp. Breathable covers, or a cover arranged with deliberate ventilation gaps at bow and stern, work much better. Whatever the material, the cover should stop short of the ground so that air can move underneath.

Building the frame

The frame carries the load and determines the shape, so it matters more than the fabric. A ridge line along the centreline with battens or a proper frame at intervals gives the slope you need. Do not use the boom as the ridge unless it is properly supported at both ends and you accept the load going into the gooseneck and the topping lift. Pad every point where a frame member touches the boat, because a wooden batten resting on a coachroof for five months in the wind will wear straight through the gelcoat.

Tensioning without sawing

Cover lines are the classic hidden destroyer. A line passed under the hull and tensioned, then left to work in the wind, will cut into the gelcoat at the turn of the bilge and mark the topsides. Use wide webbing rather than thin line where anything bears on the hull, pad every contact point, and check the tension after the first gale, since a cover that has gone slack flogs and a cover that has become over-tight tears. Do not tie cover lines to the guardrails: the wire and the stanchion bases are not designed to take that sustained load, and stanchion bases leak once they have been worked.

The specific points that get damaged

Guardrails and stanchions

Guardrail wire and its terminals sit exposed all winter and are a favourite anchor point for cover lines, which is exactly what they should not be. Where a cover does touch the guardrail, protect the wire so that neither the cover nor the wire abrades the other. Guardrail covers earn their keep here for the same reason they do in season, and they also stop the cover fabric being cut by a swaged terminal.

Fairleads and any line that leaves the boat

On a boat afloat, the mooring lines are working all winter, and every line that passes over a fairlead or a toe rail is being sawn by it. This is the single most common cause of a boat breaking free in a winter gale, and it happens gradually rather than suddenly. Protect the line at the fairlead, check it monthly, and remember that chafe protection has to stay in position rather than sliding along the line as the boat moves.

The mast and its halyards

If the mast is staying up, get the halyards off it or lash them out to the shrouds under light tension. A slatting halyard marks the mast, wears its own cover away in one spot, and is a genuine nuisance to every boat in the yard. Leave a single messenger in each run if you have taken the halyards off, and tie the ends off so they cannot be drawn up inside the spar.

Hatches, windows and seals

Hatch and window seals suffer from being left compressed in one position for months and from UV where they are exposed. Clean them, treat them if the manufacturer recommends it, and leave hatches very slightly open where the cover allows it, to keep air moving without letting water in. Do not leave a hatch dogged down hard all winter if you can avoid it.

The deck hardware itself

Once the deck is clear, the fittings that stay behind divide into three groups, and knowing which is which saves both time and money.

Remove and store

Anything that unbolts easily and is vulnerable indoors is better off the boat: snatch blocks, removable cars, the compass if it lifts out, cockpit instruments with removable covers, and any nylon or plastic fitting that will go chalky under five months of UV. Bag them, label them and keep them with the running rigging so that recommissioning is one box rather than a treasure hunt.

Clean, dry and cover

Winches are the obvious case and deserve their covers, but the same logic applies to any fitting with moving parts and internal cavities: clutches, travellers, furler drums and blocks. Rinse them thoroughly, work them so the water gets out rather than sitting in the mechanism, let them dry, and cover what has a cover. Where no cover exists, a rinse and a dry day is still most of the benefit.

Leave alone but inspect

Cleats, chainplates, stanchion bases, tracks and padeyes stay where they are, but layup is the ideal moment to look at them properly with nothing in the way. Check for movement, for crazing in the gelcoat radiating from a fastening, and for any sign of water tracking below. A stanchion base that has been worked loose by a season of fenders and boarding will leak all winter and rot the core around it, and it is a far easier repair found in October than discovered in April.

A sensible order of work

The whole job goes faster and produces a better result if it happens in the right sequence, and the most common cause of a poor layup is doing it in two rushed visits on wet days. Strip the boat completely on one day: sails, lines, canvas, loose gear, lockers emptied. Rinse everything thoroughly at the end of that session and leave the boat open to dry. Return on a dry day to inspect, cover the winches and hardware, and fit the cover, having built or checked the frame first.

Splitting it this way matters because of the drying. Fitting covers over damp hardware, or closing a boat up over a wet interior, undoes most of what the exercise is for. If the weather refuses to cooperate, prioritise: a boat left open and uncovered but dry is in better shape by March than one sealed up wet.

After the first gale

The single most valuable visit of the winter is the one made shortly after the first serious blow, because that is when the arrangement gets tested and when anything marginal reveals itself. Walk round and look specifically at the cover tension and its attachment points, at every place where the frame touches the boat, at the chafe protection on any line, and at whether water is pooling anywhere on the cover. On a boat afloat, add the mooring lines and the fenders.

Almost everything that goes badly wrong over a winter was visible and fixable at this point. A cover that has lifted at one corner in November will be shredded by January. A pad that has slipped off a batten will have worn through the gelcoat by February. Ten minutes then saves the whole job.

Boats staying afloat

A boat left in the water needs everything above, plus a serious look at the mooring arrangement, because the deck hardware is under continuous cyclic load rather than sitting still. Double up the lines so that no single failure sets the boat free, and lead the doubled lines to different cleats where possible. Fit chafe protection at every fairlead and every point where a line crosses an edge, and use long lines rather than short ones so the load is spread and the angles are gentle.

Fenders need to be positioned for winter rather than for summer: bigger, more of them, and hung so they cannot ride up over the rubbing strake when the boat surges. Check the whole arrangement monthly if you possibly can, since a fender that has worked loose in December leaves the topsides against a pontoon for the rest of the winter.

Common mistakes

Using the boom as a ridge pole without support is the most common structural error, and the load goes straight into the gooseneck. Running cover lines under the hull and tensioning them hard is the most common cosmetic one, and it leaves marks that need polishing out or worse. Sealing the boat under an impermeable tarpaulin to the ground traps humidity around the whole hull. Leaving gear lashed on deck creates chafe points nobody checks. Tying anything to the guardrails transfers load into stanchion bases that will then leak. And fitting the cover over a wet, salty deck seals in exactly what you were trying to keep out.

Frequently asked questions

Is shrink-wrap better than a tarpaulin?

Shrink-wrap fits tightly, sheds water well and does not flog, which removes several failure modes at once. Its weakness is ventilation: unless vents are fitted deliberately, it creates a sealed humid environment. It is also single-use in most cases and needs professional application. A well-made frame with a breathable cover, properly ventilated, is at least as good and reusable.

Should the cover come all the way down to the ground?

No. A cover that reaches the ground stops air circulating under the hull and around the topsides, and it turns the whole boat into a humid tent. Leave a clear gap so air can move, and accept that a little rain will reach the topsides, which does no harm at all compared with months of trapped damp.

Can I leave the boom up to support the cover?

Only if it is properly supported at both ends by something other than the topping lift alone, and only if you accept the load path into the gooseneck. A dedicated ridge pole supported from the mast and the pushpit is better, and it also gives a more useful shape than a boom, which is usually too low to create adequate slope.

How often should I check the boat over winter?

Monthly is a realistic target and it catches almost everything that matters: a cover working loose, a line chafing, a blocked drain, a fender riding up, water where it should not be. If you can only manage one visit, make it after the first serious gale rather than at a fixed date, because that is when the arrangement will have been tested.

Do I need to protect the guardrails if the boat is ashore?

It is worth it. Guardrail wire and terminals take UV and salt all winter, and they are usually in contact with the cover somewhere. Protecting them stops abrasion in both directions and keeps the cover from being cut on a swage. It also means the wire is not spending five months collecting the grime that makes inspection harder in spring.
