Boat fenders
Cylindrical, round and inflatable fenders for sail and power boats, from tenders to yachts over 15 metres: Polyform F and A series, Castro, Majoni, Fendertex and flat fenders that fold away. Every page gives length, diameter and head colour.
What size fender do I need
Fender diameter grows with boat length. As a guide:
| Boat length | Fender diameter |
|---|---|
| up to 6 m (20 ft) | 15-20 cm |
| 6-9 m (20-30 ft) | 20-25 cm |
| 9-12 m (30-40 ft) | 25-30 cm |
| 12-15 m (40-50 ft) | 30-35 cm |
| over 15 m (50 ft) | 35-40 cm |
If you often moor in a swell, against a high quay or next to bigger boats, go one size up.
Cylindrical, round or inflatable
- Cylindrical (Polyform F series): along the topsides, hung vertically or horizontally. Almost every boat needs them.
- Round (Polyform A series): at bow and stern, on flared hulls and when coming alongside.
- Inflatable and flat: they deflate or fold and take little locker space.
How many fenders
The rule of thumb is one fender per 3 metres of length on each side, with at least three per side up to 10 metres. Rafting up next to another boat calls for one more.
For more detail read the boat fender size guide. To protect the gelcoat from chafe see fender covers; to set fender height without retying knots there is the Fender Mate. Lines, hooks and dock protection are in Fenders and buoys.
Frequently asked questions
What size fender for a 26 ft (8 m) boat?
For a boat between 6 and 9 metres the guide diameter is 20-25 cm. If you often moor in a swell, go one size up.

The rule of thumb is one fender per 3 metres of length on each side, with at least three per side on boats up to 10 metres.
Cylindrical or round fenders?
Cylindrical fenders protect the topsides and suit almost every boat. Round fenders work best at bow and stern and on flared hulls: most owners add one or two to a set of cylindrical ones.
What do Polyform F and A mean?
F is the cylindrical series and A the round series. The number grows with size: each product page gives the diameter and length of the model.
