Stripping the running rigging at the end of the season removes it from five months of UV, salt and chafe, gives you a chance to wash and inspect every line while it is in your hands, and stops halyards slatting against the mast all winter. The work takes an afternoon, the only real skill involved is marking and recording what you remove so that spring is a reassembly job rather than a puzzle, and the payoff is rope that lasts noticeably longer.
Not every owner does it, and there is a legitimate argument for leaving lines in place on a boat that stays in the water and gets used through the winter. But for a boat being laid up, the balance is clear: rope left rove through blocks and clutches for a winter takes UV on the same exposed sections, holds salt against the fibres, sits wet in the low points of every run, and works back and forth in the same fairleads every time the wind blows.
What winter does to rope
Ultraviolet degradation
UV is the main enemy of polyester and, more sharply, of the exposed cover on Dyneema-cored lines. It works from the outside in, gradually powdering the surface fibres and reducing the strength of the cover. A line left rove takes that exposure on the same short sections all winter, which is why halyards so often fail near the masthead sheave or just above the clutch: those are the parts that never move and never get shaded.
Salt in the fibres
Salt crystals inside a rope's braid are abrasive and hygroscopic. They work between fibres every time the line is loaded and flexed, cutting them mechanically, and they draw moisture out of the air so the rope stays damp. A stiff, board-like sheet at the start of a season is a rope full of salt, and stiffness matters beyond comfort: a rope that will not run freely through a block loads the crew and the hardware more than it should.
Chafe and slatting
A halyard left slack at the mast slaps against the spar every time it blows. Over a winter that is tens of thousands of impacts, wearing the cover at one point, marking the anodising on the mast, and driving everyone in the marina to distraction. Sheets left rove through fairleads work in the same spot whenever the boat moves at its lines.
What to remove and what to leave
Remove everything you can: main and headsail halyards, spinnaker halyard, sheets, guys, reefing lines, kicker and traveller controls, topping lift, preventer, and any control line led aft. Take off the running blocks and snatch blocks too, along with soft shackles and any textile connectors, since they are small, easily lost and much better cleaned and stored indoors.
What you should leave, or rather replace, is a messenger line in every internal run. This is the whole trick to removing halyards without creating work for yourself in spring, and it is covered in detail below. Removing halyards without losing the run
A halyard removed from a mast without a messenger leaves you fishing a new line through an enclosed spar in spring, which is a genuinely miserable job. The method is simple and it must not be skipped.
Attaching a messenger
Take a length of light line — 3 or 4 mm pre-stretched or a dedicated messenger — slightly longer than the halyard. Join it to the halyard end so that the joint is smooth and slim enough to pass over every sheave and through every exit slot. The best joint is a tapered splice or a whipped and stitched overlap; the worst is a bulky knot, which is exactly what jams at the masthead sheave and turns a ten-minute job into a mast climb. Tape the joint smoothly after stitching.
Pulling through
Pull the halyard out slowly, feeling for resistance rather than hauling. If it stops, do not force it: back off, work the joint gently, and check that it is not catching an exit box. Have someone tail the messenger under light tension so it does not get pulled up into the spar with the halyard, which is the one failure mode that leaves you exactly where you would have been with no messenger at all. Make both ends of the messenger fast when you are done, one at deck level and one at the mast base, and note in your list which messenger belongs to which halyard.
External halyards and sheets
External runs and cockpit-led control lines are simpler: just note the route before you unreeve, because a five-part kicker or a traveller system is not obvious in six months' time. A photograph on your phone of each run before you take it apart is the cheapest insurance there is, and it takes two minutes.

Washing and inspecting
Wash the lines in fresh water. A bath, a large tub or a water butt works well: let them soak for several hours to dissolve the salt, agitate them, then rinse and change the water. A gentle wool detergent is acceptable; strong detergents, solvents and any kind of bleach are not, since they attack the fibres and any coating on the cover. A washing machine on a cool, gentle cycle with the lines inside a pillowcase or a mesh bag works for smaller lines, provided there is no spin at high speed and no fabric conditioner.
While the lines are wet and slack is the best moment to inspect them, because damage shows up more clearly. Run every metre through your hands looking for glazing from heat, flat spots where the core has been damaged, cover slippage, cuts, and areas where the cover has gone furry and chalky from UV. Pay particular attention to the sections that sit in clutches and at sheaves, since those take the concentrated wear. A line with a damaged core will feel soft and hollow in that section even when the cover looks intact.
Dry them completely before storage, hung in loose coils or hanks in moving air rather than in tight coils, which trap water in the middle. Like sails, rope feels dry long before the core is dry.
Different ropes age in different ways
Treating every line on the boat identically is convenient but slightly wasteful, because the materials in a modern rigging inventory degrade by different routes and at different rates. Knowing which is which tells you where to concentrate the inspection.
Polyester double braid
The workhorse of most cruising boats, and the most forgiving. It loses strength slowly under UV, absorbs a little water, and gives good warning before it fails: the cover goes fuzzy and chalky, the line stiffens, and localised damage is visible. Salt is its main enemy in service, which is why washing genuinely extends its life. A well-cared-for polyester sheet lasts many seasons.
Dyneema-cored lines
The core is extraordinarily strong and essentially immune to water, but it is the cover that takes the UV and the abrasion, and the cover is doing more than protecting: on many halyards it also provides the grip in the clutch. A Dyneema line whose cover has degraded can retain most of its breaking strength while becoming unusable, because it will slip through the clutch under load. Inspect the cover on these lines specifically rather than judging by feel, since the core keeps the line feeling strong long after the cover has given up. Dyneema also creeps slowly under sustained load, which is another argument for taking halyards off rather than leaving them tensioned all winter.
Textile connectors and soft shackles
Soft shackles and textile loops live in the same UV environment as the lines but are smaller, so a given amount of surface degradation matters proportionally more. They are also cheap enough that replacing a doubtful one is never the wrong decision. Wash them with the lines, dry them, and store them in a box rather than leaving them clipped to the pushpit all winter, where they will get the full UV load for no reason.
While the lines are off: the hardware
An empty deck is the only easy time to look at the hardware the lines run through, and problems there destroy rope faster than anything else. Run a finger around every sheave and check that each one actually turns freely; a seized sheave does not merely add friction, it saws the cover off a halyard in a season. Look inside the clutches for accumulated grit and for cam teeth that have worn smooth or, worse, sharp. Check the fairleads and any deck organiser for burrs and grooves worn into the metal, because a groove with an edge on it will cut a new line as efficiently as it cut the last one.
Rinse the whole lot with fresh water, work the moving parts, and note anything that needs replacing while there is a whole winter to source it. If a particular line has been chafing repeatedly in the same place, the cause is almost always a piece of hardware rather than the rope, and this is the moment to find it rather than to fit a new line into the same trap.
Marking, recording and storing
Label everything
Tag each line as it comes off with what it is and, where relevant, which end is which: "main halyard, masthead end" saves real time. Adhesive labels fall off; a luggage tag whipped on with twine, or a strip of tape written on and then taped over itself, survives a winter. Keep a simple written list, on paper or on your phone, of what you removed, where each messenger is, and anything you noted as needing replacement.
Coil for storage, not for show
Store lines in loose hanks rather than tight coils. Braided rope has no lay to it and does not need traditional coiling; what it does need is not to be compressed into hard bends for five months. Hang the hanks if you can, or lay them in a ventilated crate. Avoid sealed plastic boxes, which trap residual moisture and produce exactly the mould you washed the salt off to prevent.
Where to keep them
Somewhere dry, dark and cool. UV keeps working on rope in a sunny window, and a warm loft is preferable to a damp garage floor. Off the ground, always. Keep the small hardware — turning blocks, snatch blocks, soft shackles, stopper knots' worth of odd fittings — in a labelled box with the lines, having rinsed and dried them too.
Putting it all back in spring
Reassembly is where the winter's discipline pays off or does not. Work from your list and your photographs. Bend each halyard onto its messenger with the same smooth, slim joint you used in the autumn and pull it through under light tension, tailing the messenger so it stays in place for next time. Reeve control lines before you bend on the sails, because a clear deck makes the job far quicker.
Take the opportunity to change what wears. Halyards that always chafe in the same place can often be end-for-ended, doubling their useful life, and this is the moment to do it since the line is already out. Anything you flagged as damaged in the autumn should have been replaced over the winter rather than being rove back on optimistically.

Common mistakes
Pulling a halyard out with no messenger is the classic, and it converts a simple job into a mast climb or a professional call-out. Using a bulky knot to join the messenger is the same mistake with extra steps, since it jams at the sheave. Storing lines damp, or in sealed plastic, produces mould and a smell that never quite leaves. Skipping the labelling feels efficient in October and costs an hour of confusion in April. And washing with harsh detergents or bleach in an attempt to make old rope look new damages fibres that were perfectly serviceable.
One further mistake is worth naming because it is invisible until spring: leaving halyards tensioned hard at the mast over the winter. Owners do it to stop slatting, which is a reasonable instinct, but a line held under sustained tension for five months takes a set, and Dyneema in particular creeps under constant load. The better answer is to take the halyards off entirely, or if they must stay, to tie them off to the shrouds or a spare cleat with just enough tension to stop the slap and no more.
