What "laying up" actually has to achieve
Before comparing locations, it helps to be clear about what the winter is doing to the boat, because both options are attempts to manage the same set of problems. Over five or six months of disuse, a boat faces water ingress from above, moisture and mould inside, corrosion at every dissimilar-metal junction, degradation of anything organic or polymeric under UV and frost, mechanical wear from movement, and the slow deterioration of systems that are not being exercised.
Ashore and afloat address that list differently. Ashore removes the water risk almost entirely and makes the underwater body accessible, but it introduces frost exposure and unnatural hull support. Afloat keeps the hull evenly supported and the interior temperature stable, but leaves every through-hull, every mooring line and the whole rig exposed to winter weather with nobody aboard. Understanding which items on that list matter most for your boat is how you choose.
Laying up ashore
The advantages
The single biggest gain is that the boat cannot sink. That sounds glib, but the majority of total losses among cruising boats happen at moorings and in marinas during winter, not at sea, and hauling out removes that entire category of risk in one move. The second gain is access. With the boat on the hard you can inspect and work on the rudder bearings, the propeller and shaft, the seacocks, the anodes and the antifouling, all of which are effectively unreachable afloat. Winter is when those maintenance jobs are convenient rather than urgent, and a boat ashore invites you to do them.
There is also a real benefit in letting the hull dry. Fibreglass absorbs a small amount of water over a season, and a few months out of the water lets that moisture content drop. For boats with any history of osmotic blistering, or simply for owners who want to keep the laminate in good condition over decades, an annual dry-out is worthwhile. Fouling growth also stops dead: whatever fouling was on the hull in October dies and can be scraped or pressure-washed off, rather than continuing to develop through a mild winter.
The disadvantages
Cost is the obvious one. Hauling, storage and relaunch typically add up to considerably more than a winter berth, and yards in popular areas charge accordingly. Beyond money, the hull is now supported in a way its designer did not intend. Afloat, the load is distributed across the whole wetted surface; ashore, it sits on a keel block and a handful of pads. Poorly placed pads on a long-keeled or heavily built boat are tolerable, but on a lightly built fin-keeled hull with a large unsupported span they can leave permanent distortion or gelcoat crazing. A cradle designed for the boat, or a yard that knows how to place pads, is not a luxury.
Frost is the other cost of coming out. Water in an engine block, a heat exchanger, a calorifier, a water tank or a pipe run expands when it freezes, and ashore the boat has no thermal buffer from the surrounding water. In a cold climate a boat afloat rarely sees the interior drop below a few degrees, whereas the same boat ashore can sit well below zero for days. Winterisation of the engine and the freshwater system stops being advisable and becomes mandatory.
Laying up afloat
The advantages
Cost again leads, in the opposite direction: a winter berth is usually the cheaper option, sometimes markedly so, and there is no lift-out or relaunch fee. The hull stays evenly supported, which eliminates the distortion risk entirely. The surrounding water acts as a thermal flywheel, holding the interior temperature far more stable than an exposed boat ashore and greatly reducing frost risk inside the hull.
Access is the underrated advantage. A boat in a marina berth twenty minutes from home gets visited. You notice the chafed line, the loose halyard slapping, the damp locker, the flat battery, and you deal with each of them in ten minutes before they become expensive. The same boat in a yard forty minutes further away, up a ladder in the rain, gets visited far less. In practice the option that gets checked most often is frequently the safer one, whatever the theory says.
The disadvantages
Everything below the waterline stays unreachable and stays wet. Growth continues through mild winters, anodes keep depleting, and any seacock or hose that is going to fail has all winter to do it with nobody aboard. The boat depends on its bilge pump and its batteries, and both of those have a limited life without attention. A stuck float switch, a discharged battery bank and a weeping stern gland is a well-documented sequence that ends with the boat on the bottom of its berth.
The rig and deck also stay exposed to the full run of winter gales while the boat is free to move. Mooring lines chafe, fenders wear through, halyards slat against the mast, and a boat that spends four months snubbing against its lines in a cross-wind puts real cyclic load into cleats and fairleads. None of that is dramatic on any single night; it is the accumulation that does the damage.

What decides it for your boat
Climate
The colder the winter, the stronger the argument for staying afloat, or for laying up ashore with genuinely thorough winterisation. In a Mediterranean winter, frost is a marginal concern and the decision turns on cost, fouling and access. In a northern climate where the boat will see repeated hard freezes, an inadequately winterised boat ashore is at meaningful risk of a cracked engine block or split pipework, and the discipline required goes up sharply.
Hull construction and age

Rinse the deck and the hardware thoroughly with fresh water and let it dry before covering anything. Get air moving through the interior, because a sealed boat is a mouldy boat, and open every locker, lift every cushion on edge and leave the sole boards ajar. Deal with the batteries deliberately rather than by neglect, and either leave them on a proper maintenance charge or take them home.
Ashore, add full engine and freshwater winterisation, check the pad and block placement yourself rather than assuming, and make sure the cover sheds water outward rather than pooling. Afloat, add a full inspection and doubling of mooring lines with chafe protection at every fairlead, fenders sized and positioned for winter rather than summer, a bilge pump and battery you have actually tested, and a halyard discipline that stops everything slatting against the mast for four months.
The middle options
The choice is not strictly binary, and some of the best answers sit between the two. A short haul is the most useful of them: the boat stays afloat for the winter but comes out for a week either side of the season for antifouling, anodes and a seacock inspection. That combination gives you the low cost and stable temperature of a winter afloat while removing the main objection to it, which is that the underwater body goes unexamined for years at a time. It costs one extra lift but it buys back the inspection you would otherwise skip.
The reverse arrangement also works in mild climates. Some owners haul out for the two or three worst months only, rather than the full six, keeping the boat afloat and usable into late autumn and getting it back in the water early. This suits anyone who sails opportunistically through the shoulder seasons and resents writing off half the year, though it does mean paying for two lifts and it only makes sense where winter storm risk is genuinely concentrated in a short window.
Timing matters more than owners expect in either direction. Hauling out very early in a mild autumn means paying for storage during weeks you could have been sailing and exposing the boat to frost for longer than necessary. Leaving it too late means competing for a yard slot in the middle of the rush, taking whatever pad placement you are given, and doing the rinse-and-dry work in weather that makes drying impossible. Booking a slot in the first half of the autumn, then choosing the actual date around a settled dry spell, gets you the best of both.
What winter actually costs you either way
It is worth separating the visible costs from the ones that arrive later. The visible ones are easy: the lift, the hardstanding, the relaunch, or the berth fee. The invisible ones are the jobs that a badly chosen or badly executed layup creates in spring, and they are frequently larger. A winter of trapped damp inside a sealed boat produces mould on every soft furnishing and a headlining that has to come down. A flat battery bank left discharged for five months is often a battery bank that needs replacing. A chafed mooring line that parted in a February gale can cost far more than the berth did.
Set against that, the cost of doing it properly is mostly time rather than money. Ventilation costs nothing but a few hours opening things up. Doubling and protecting mooring lines is an afternoon. Rinsing the deck hardware and covering the winches is another. Owners who compare only the yard invoice against the berth invoice are comparing the small half of the equation.
